Alfred Kauter

Alfred Kauter (born January 22, 1905 in Azmoos (municipality of Wartau in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley); † August 5, 1985 in Muri near Bern ) was a Swiss agricultural scientist.

Live and act

Alfred Kauter studied agriculture at the ETH Zurich and received his doctorate there in 1933 with a dissertation on the root growth of grasses. In 1934 he took over the management of the working group for the promotion of fodder production in Switzerland. From 1953 to 1970 he was Vice Director of the Agriculture Department of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs (today: Federal Office for Agriculture). In this function he was in charge of the arable and crop production sections, as well as vegetable, fruit and viticulture and the entire field testing system of the associated research institutes.

Kauter's main area of ​​interest was grazing and fodder farming. He mainly published the results of the experiments he carried out in practice-oriented specialist bodies. Together with Arnold Schnyder , he wrote a textbook published several times on arable and fodder farming.
