Life

Alfred Schnüttgen decided to work as a missionary and was sent to northern Brazil by his order. From 1956 he lived and worked here with the local fishermen. He was ordained a priest in this place on August 10, 1956. During a visit to fishing projects in West Africa in March 1990, Father Alfred Schnüttgen became infected with malaria. A few days after returning to Brazil, he died on April 1, 1990 in the Tricentenário hospital in Olinda.

Services

Alfred Schnüttgen worked as a missionary for social justice in Brazil. He is considered one of the founders of Brazil Aid as a country-specific development aid , which is continued today by various associations. His activity was focused on working with fishermen in the context of a fisherman pastoral . From a pastoral activity, his commitment developed more to a commitment to the political and social rights of fishermen. Among other things, he initiated the establishment of a fishermen's union. During the time of the Brazilian military dictatorship, this repeatedly brought him into conflict with the police and the local oligarchs. In 1975, Georg Stingl directed a documentary about his work under the title Fischfang in Olinda - Pastoral work with the forgotten . He also published a book about his work under the title Fishermen on the Path to Their Promotion and Liberation. Schnüttgen recognized the importance of environmental protection early on, as the fishermen had to experience the effects of industrial water pollution first hand. One of his comrades-in-arms in the fight against water pollution was Archbishop Dom Helder Camara , with whom he enjoyed a friendly relationship.
