Alheira is a place and a former municipality ( Freguesia ) in the northern Portuguese district of Barcelos . The community had 1,074 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
As part of the regional reform on September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Alheira and Igreja Nova were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Alheira e Igreja Nova . Alheira is the seat of this newly formed community.
