The Greek Mediterranean -Insel Alimia ( Greek Αλιμιά [ alimja ] ( f. Sg. )), Also Almia , mostly Alimnia ( Greek Αλιμνιά ) belongs to the group of islands Dodecanese in the Aegean Sea . The island is administered by the municipality of Chalki within the South Aegean region (Περιφέρεια Νότιου Αιγαίου).

The only 6.5 km² large island, which is up to 5 km long and 4 km wide and towers up to 274 m high, is located about seven kilometers west of the island of Rhodes and six kilometers east of Chalki .

Ormos Amelias bay

Together with the rocky island of Tragoussa to the south , on which there is only a beacon , it almost forms the shape of a question mark, as the bay of Ormos Amelias cuts deep into the island's land mass in the west .

The partially forested island, which has springs, is uninhabited except for a few shepherds who only live here temporarily. The ruins of the hamlet of the same name testify to the fact that it was inhabited until 1960. The church, which is visited once a year by the former residents (mostly from Chalki) and their relatives, is well preserved and cared for for a festival.

There are no regular ferry connections to Alimia, where there are two major sights and clean beaches, but at least in the high season there is an occasional opportunity to reach the island by fishing boats from Rhodes, or better from Chalki.

World War II graffiti

The top of the island is crowned by a Johanniter castle ruin, which once gave fire signs to Rhodes. On the south side of the island, in the accommodations of the German occupiers from the Second World War, there are original graffiti that testify to the soldiers' longing for their homeland.

During the Second World War , Alimia was a speedboat anchorage and submarine hiding place for the German Navy. In 1944 the residents were deported.
