General Declaration of Language Rights
The Universal Declaration of Language Rights (also: Barcelona Declaration ) was adopted at the World Conference on Language Rights (June 6-8, 1996) in Barcelona , based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights . Among other things, she emphasizes the personal right to use one's own language.
The signatories include the international PEN club and various non-governmental organizations that campaign for language rights, especially for endangered languages. The declaration has not yet been adopted by UNESCO .
The idea of a declaration was first proposed in 1984 by the Brazilian Francisco Gomes de Matos.
