The Alliance for Progress ( Alliance for Progress ) was an agreement for economic cooperation between North and South America , in 1961 by the then US President John F. Kennedy was initiated. The aim of the agreement was to prevent other countries in Latin and South America from cooperating with the Soviet Union against the background of the Cuban Revolution .

Goals and Results

In this agreement, the United States committed itself to extensive investments in the economy and education of the countries of Latin and South America. Most countries were quite open to this, but refused to agree to a land agreement. Furthermore, the agreement failed because of Kennedy's death and the fact that his successors showed little interest in the agreement.

In the early 1970s, the alliance was viewed as a failure and reinstated under President Richard Nixon . The reason for this was that the economic successes had largely failed and the attention of the USA was increasingly turning to Chile and its head of state Salvador Allende .

Reactions

The response from Cuba was weak. The Cuban rulers warned against an even greater dependency on the USA, but left each country free to decide whether to join the alliance.

The US public responded positively because, unlike the Bay of Pigs invasion, it was a non-violent route.

Reactions from the Soviet Union were largely absent.
