Allogenes (CT)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(Allogenes) is the name of an only partially preserved Gnostic script from the 3rd century. It forms the fourth part of the Codex Tchacos (CT 4). The Coptic stories reproduce the traditions of Jesus and most likely go back to a Greek original. The original title of the work is unknown because the beginning of the papyrus is missing. The hypothetical title of the first editors is therefore usually put in brackets: (Allogenes)
"Allogenes" (Greek: 'Αλλογενής, "the one of the opposite sex", "foreign origin") is the name for Jesus in the text.

Author, dating

The text does not offer any pointers to determine the time of origin or the place of writing. The author is unknown. The 3rd century is believed to be the time of origin. The genre of the text cannot be clearly determined either: narrative parts are close to gospel literature, a revelation speech takes up a lot of space. The original language of writing was likely Greek.

content

The Codex Chacos is incomplete, so the original scope of the script is unknown.

  • Prayer (of the disciples?) For knowledge of one's own origin and future
  • Prayer and Proskynesis on Mount Thambor
  • Temptation story: Allogenes resists Satan, who withdraws ashamed
  • Prayer of the allogene for protection from all evil and for complete enlightenment
  • Revelation speech of God from a cloud of light: promise to Allogenes that he will not be held by Satan, but will go "up to all great eons"

The content is very close to certain passages in “Hypostasis of the Archons” (HA; in: NHC II, 2) and the “Ode about Norea ” (OdNor; in: NHC IX, 2). While the rest of the "Allogenes" literature is partially assigned to the Setian Gnosis, this can be excluded for the "(Allogenes)". In the text Allogenes , NHC XI, 3, however, there is talk of the books of Allogenes, of which this book could be one.
