AlltheWeb

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

AlltheWeb was an Internet search engine introduced by Fast Search and Transfer in 1999 , based on a search engine developed in 1997 by the same company. In February 2003, the Internet search division of Fast Search and Transfer was bought by Overture , which in turn was acquired by Yahoo in March 2004 .

AlltheWeb initially had an up-to-date database, advanced search options and a completely customizable appearance. Shortly after the Yahoo takeover, they began using the Yahoo database for searches and removed some advanced search options such as FTP , MP3 and video searches. As before, AlltheWeb allowed searches on the basis of Boolean expressions .

Fast Search and Transfer wanted to make the database available to other search engines when the search engine was started, similar to what Inktomi had already successfully done before. In fact, Lycos used the 2000 results in the Lycos PRO search . At this point the database had grown from 80 million to 200 million pages. However, the goal of including the entire publicly accessible Internet was far from being achieved. In 2002 the crawler had covered over 2 billion pages and thus initiated a new round in the battle of the search engines. Before the Yahoo purchase, the database contained approximately 3.3 billion URIs .

AlltheWeb was discontinued on April 4, 2011 and the domain has been redirecting to the Yahoo! search since then.
