The Almolonga is a 3,197 meter high andesitic stratovolcano in Guatemala with a central caldera with a diameter of 3.3 kilometers. The Cerro Quemada crater is the youngest historically active cathedral complex. When this cathedral collapsed 1,200 years ago, debris avalanches with an estimated volume of 13 million cubic meters were created, which flowed through the western valley to the flanks of the neighboring volcano Siete Orejas . In addition, at least 20 million cubic meters of lava was expelled. The last eruption in 1818 created a 2.5 kilometer long lava flow. Historical records show another explosive eruption from October 24-25, 1765. Hot springs are located on the north and east flanks of Cerro Quemada and a geothermal research project is taking place on the south-east flank.
