Alois Zátopek (born June 30, 1907 in Zašová , Moravia , † June 22, 1985 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak geophysicist and pioneer of seismology in Czechoslovakia.

After graduating from high school in 1927, Zátopek studied mathematics and physics in Prague with his doctorate in 1932 and his habilitation in geophysics in 1946. From 1934 he worked at the State Geophysical Institute in Prague (during the German occupation it became that of the German University in Prague) he became deputy director and head of seismology, and from 1935 to 1954 he headed the seismological service of Czechoslovakia. In 1952 he became a professor at the Charles University in Prague , where he founded the Department of Geophysics.

He dealt with theoretical geophysics, tectonophysics, mechanisms of microseismics, deep structure and seismics of the Bohemian massif, instrument development, observational seismology and geophysical synthesis. Around 220 publications come from him.

In 1968 he became a member of the Leopoldina . In 1953 he became a corresponding and 1968 full member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (ČSAV), whose geophysical institute he founded. In 1964 he became an honorary member of the Hungarian Geophysical Society.

From 1962 to 1966 he was President of the European Seismological Commission (ESC) and from 1960 to 1970 he headed its sub-committee for the Carpathians and the Balkans. He was also an advisor to UNESCO on earthquakes and in various international commissions after severe earthquakes. In 1958 he became a member of the international commission for the detection of nuclear explosions in Geneva.
