Alpha Regio is a highland on the planet Venus . It is named after Alpha , the first letter of the Greek alphabet, because in 1963 it was the first structure of the surface of Venus to be seen by radar from Earth. The name was approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1979 .

Alpha Regio rises up from the surrounding lowlands with a diameter of about 1300 kilometers. According to the planetary nomenclature , it is a tessera; this name stands for a parquet-like, polygonally structured landscape on Venus. The highlands are criss-crossed by faults that run almost at right angles to each other and are characterized by diverse geological features such as hollows, ravines, steep slopes and rift breaks with flat ground.
