Life

Under the name of Alphonse Esquiros , the author first emerged with the collection of poems "Les Hirondelles" (1834), to which he wrote the novels "Le Magicien" (1837) and "Charlotte Corday" (1840) as well as the "Chants d'un prisonnier" ( 1841). He wrote "Chants d'un prisonnier" while serving an eight-month prison sentence, to which he was sentenced for his work "Évangile du peuple" (1840), a depiction of the life of Jesus, which was perceived as scandalous. During this time (1841–1842) some socially critical publications appeared such as: "Les vierges folles", "Les vierges martyrs" and "Les vierges sages". Elected to the National Assembly in 1848, he was banished from France after the coup d'état of Dec. 2, 1851 , and lived in England for many years until he was given by Napoleon III. The amnesty granted enabled him to return to France. Here he again became a member of the legislative assembly in 1869. On February 8, 1871, he was elected to the National Assembly, where he worked as a member of the far left.
