The Alsenkreuz was donated on December 7, 1864 by King Wilhelm I of Prussia to commemorate the conquest of Alsen by Prussian troops during the German-Danish War .

The state award is a cross made of bronze , which is underlaid by a laurel wreath under the cross arms . In the medallion it shows the left-facing portrait of the founder with the inscription WILHELM KOENIG VON PRUSSEN . On the reverse of the medallion the depiction of the Prussian eagle above a boat floating on the Alsensund. In the arms of the cross, from top to bottom, it says ALSEN 29 JUN. 1864.

Combatants wore the medal, the ribbon ring of which was attached to the cross by a wide grooved eyelet, on a blue ribbon with two orange stripes and a black and white border, non-combatants on an orange blue striped ribbon with a black and white border on the left chest. In addition, on April 18, 1865, a special ribbon with black, white and orange edging was donated for the troops in reserve.

For non-combatants who belonged to or served the Order of St. John, a special cross was made of blackened iron on April 18, 1865, which was worn on the 30 mm wide ribbon of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern.
