From 1869 to 1889 he was an editor at the Justus Perthes publishing house and worked there a. a. on the genealogical handbook of the nobility, briefly referred to as "Gotha" , and its French edition, the Almanach de Gotha . During his publishing work he also got to know many researchers, including Gustav Nachtigal and Georg Schweinfurth , whose reports later flowed into his literary work.

In Gotha in 1870 he married Anna Theresia Arnoldi (* 1847), daughter of the Kommerzienrat Heinrich Johannes Arnoldi. From this marriage a daughter emerged, Maria Niemann, who later became a painter. A younger brother of A. Niemann was the German-Austrian architect George Niemann .

In 1904, Niemann published the novel The World War: German Dreams , which was also published in English as The coming conquest of England . This war utopia received great attention, in the foreword of which he declared the British to be the main enemy: “My dreams, the dreams of a German, show me the war and victory of the three great allied nations, Germany, France and Russia, and a new distribution of the Possession of the earth as the ultimate goal of this mighty world war « .

August Niemann maintained correspondence with many well-known personalities of his time: Karl May , Bertha von Suttner , August Petermann , Gustav Teichmüller , Ernst von Wildenbruch , Albert Emil Brachvogel and others. a.
