Johannes Gehrts , also Jochen Gehrts (born February 26, 1855 in St. Pauli , † October 5, 1921 in Düsseldorf ), was a German painter , book illustrator and costume designer .

Johannes Gehrts was born as the son of the painter JH Gehrts . The family lived in the “new Friedrichstrasse courtyard No. 17”. His older brother was the painter Carl Gehrts , his younger the painter and illustrator Franz Gehrts . Johannes Gehrts married Laura Adeline Adelgunde Auguste Koettgen (1848–1924), a daughter of the painter Gustav Adolf Koettgen and older sister of his sister-in-law Anna .

Gehrts attended the art academy in Weimar from 1873 to 1876 and was taught by Albert Baur , among others . Johannes Gehrts lived and taught in Düsseldorf from 1884. He belonged to the Düsseldorf School of Painting .

On the III. International exhibition of watercolors, pastels, hand drawings and etchings in Dresden in 1892 he exhibited four pictures: “In the desolate moor”, “On the trail of the dragon”, “Grimme enemies” and “After a difficult fight”. Gehrts is considered an important book illustrator of the 19th century. Many of his pictures were printed in the gazebo and in the flying leaves . He illustrated books on Germanic heroic sagas, naval and pirate stories, travel adventure novels and fairy tales. The paintings and illustrations of heroic sagas, mythology and folk life of the Germanic peoples earned him the nickname “Germanen-Gehrts”.

He was a member of the Marchia Bonn fraternity .
