Life
Meyer came from a family of wine merchants that had lived in Hamburg since 1728 and, after his mother's death, was retired to a pastor in Eutin , where he attended secondary school. He spent the last two years of school again at the Johanneum in Hamburg and then completed a commercial apprenticeship at Burmester & Stavenhagen from 1842 to 1846 .
After a long stay abroad in New York, Meyer joined the company Behn, Meyer & Co. (today Behn Meyer Holding AG ) in Singapore, founded by his brother Valentin Lorenz and the shipowner Theodor August Behn . There he was a part-time Prussian and from 1852 also a Hanseatic (honorary) consul , interrupted by the years 1858 to 1861, in which Johannes Mooyer held the office.
1857 Meyer founded his own trading firm Arnold Otto Meyer , the first as Hamburger representation of Behn, Meyer & Co. acted. Together, both companies were mainly involved in Southeast Asia trade and imported copra , pepper, tapioca , sago, gum, tree resins and other natural products, but also tin, to Europe on a large scale . At the beginning of 1900, Meyer left both companies as a partner; After his death, Behn, Meyer & Co. was converted into a limited company, while the Arnold Otto Meyer company became the common main building and still operates under the name Behn Meyer Holding AG to this day .
In addition to his business activities, Meyer took on various honorary positions in Hamburg and was, among other things, commercial judge and in 1874/75 administrator of the "Dutch poor fund". From 1866 to 1880 Meyer was also a member of the Hamburg parliament . Meyer was also an extraordinary member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 .
In his private life, Meyer collected drawings by artists of his time, some of whom he was friendly with, including Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld , Moritz von Schwind , Edward von Steinle , Christian Carl Magnussen and Anselm Feuerbach . The collection was later inherited by his son Eduard Lorenz Lorenz-Meyer , who had it auctioned in Leipzig in 1914. His daughter was married to the Altona Senator Alexander Baur in her first marriage .
