Eduard Lorenz Lorenz-Meyer
Eduard Lorenz Lorenz-Meyer (born July 12, 1856 in Singapore , † April 25, 1926 in Hamburg ) was a German entrepreneur , art collector , heraldist and art patron .
Life
His father was the entrepreneur Arnold Otto Meyer (1825–1913) and his mother was Luise Caroline Ferber (1833–1907). As the only son of his father, he completed a commercial apprenticeship from 1874 to 1877; later he took over his father's company. After his military service in 1877/1878, he worked in Singapore for Behn, Meyer & Co. (today Behn Meyer Holding AG ).
Lorenz-Meyer married Alice Meyer on December 11, 1884, the daughter of the Hamburg lawyer and senator Ernst Friedrich Sieveking , with whom he had three children. In 1888 he returned with his family from Singapore and now worked in his father's company, which developed well in the following years. After the First World War, the company led by Lorenz-Meyer lost its branch in Singapore. The property located there in Singapore was confiscated by the British and not returned. Lorenz-Meyer also lost his British citizenship. In 1922 a new branch was established in Java, the Straits Java Trading Company . In 1925, Lorenz-Meyer withdrew from the management of the company, which he left to his son Albrecht.
Alongside Otto Hupp and Gustav Adolf Closs, Lorenz-Meyer is considered to be the best heraldist of his time and has acquired a far-reaching reputation beyond the limits of his life. As a social conservative, Lorenz-Meyer was a member of the “Bund Deutscher Bodenreformer”, and from 1905 he was a member of the “Reichsverband gegen die Sozialdemokratie”. During the Weimar Republic, Lorenz-Meyer was a member of the DVP party .
Lorenz-Meyer was the founder of the Hamburger Kunsthalle . He donated several exhibits to the Museum für Völkerkunde in Hamburg, which he had collected on his travels in East Asia. Lorenz-Meyer also owned a collection of East Asian weapons.
Lorenz-Meyer drew as an artist, and a number of watercolors come from him. From 1955 to 1986 there was a “Lorenz Meyer Room” in the Kunsthalle Hamburg, which presented these works.
