Adolf von Grundherr zu Altenthann and Weyerhaus (born September 30, 1848 in Munich ; † April 6, 1908 there ) was a German painter , draftsman and designer .

Adolf Friedrich Sigmund landlord von Altenthann und Weiherhaus came from the Nuremberg city ​​nobility. The father, Sigmund Freiherr von Grundherr (Nuremberg 1797–1873 Munich), royal Bavarian artillery officer, married her sister Anna Sophie Kreitner (1808–1859) from Speinshardt , municipality of Eschenbach in the Upper Palatinate , after the death of his first wife Catholics had converted to the Protestant denomination. The 15 children of this marriage were all born in Munich; only six of them reached adulthood.

education

Adolf von Grundherr attended the Protestant elementary school and from 1859 to 1868 the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich until he graduated from high school. He then studied law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1871 he moved to the Nuremberg School of Applied Arts , where he primarily devoted himself to book art and designing for glass painting. By 1 November 1872 its entrance is in the antiquities class of the Munich Art Academy documented, where he studied with Andreas Müller and until 1881 in the composition class of Karl Theodor von Piloty trained as a painter. With a government grant, he then went on a one-year trip to Italy .

Adolf von Grundherr lived in Munich all his life and remained unmarried. He died at the age of 59 and was buried in the Altes Südfriedhof in Munich.

Von Grundherr was a versatile painter and graphic artist, illustrator and designer for glass windows, sculptural works and murals. He was a member of the Munich Artists' Cooperative (MKG), the Munich Artists Support Association and the Munich Art Association . As early as 1880 he showed a painting The Taming of the Shrew in Düsseldorf and in 1882 in Nuremberg. Other early pictures were The Nymph of the Fountain , Haideprinzesschen's toilet , a woman in a white robe and flowers in her hair, and a zither player . He created an epitaph for the businessman Georg von Grundherr, who died in Chile in 1899 .

For the ballroom of the Scholastika clubhouse of the Academic Choral Society (AGV) in Munich, of which he was also a member, von Grundherr designed a four-part painting in 1896, which he himself executed in 1897 and which was used in an architectural framework. The paintings were integrated into the ballroom of the new building in 1914. The cycle shows a parade with musicians, which is greeted by the Münchner Kindl . The persons depicted represent the portraits of association members; among them the painters Hermann Bever , Eugen von Stieler and Adolf von Grundherr himself.
