Elisabeth of Romania

Elisabeth of Romania , full name Elisabetha Charlotte Josephine Alexandra Victoria , (born September 29, 1894 at Peleș Castle in Sinaia ; † November 15, 1956 in Cannes , France ) was a Romanian princess from the house of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and in the years 1922 to 1924 Queen Elisabeth of Greece.

Life

Elisabeth as Queen of Greece with her husband Georg

Princess Elisabeth was born at Peleș Castle in 1894 as the eldest daughter of the Romanian Crown Prince Ferdinand , later King Ferdinand I of Romania (1865–1927) and Princess Marie of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha , Princess of Great Britain and Ireland. It was named after Queen Elisabeth of Romania (nee Princess zu Wied) and was called Lizzy or Lisabetha in the family . She was a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England and Tsar Alexander II of Russia.

She was raised by English teachers and nannies. When her parents traveled abroad, Elisabeth often looked after her younger siblings, which was a difficult but formative task for her. Elisabeth loved literature and was an avid reader. She also dealt with embroidery, painting and music. Playing the piano and singing were among her favorite activities.

On February 27, 1921, she married the Greek Crown Prince Georg in Bucharest . After the abdication of his father, King Constantine I , George ascended the throne on September 27, 1922 as George II , King of the Hellenes . After the proclamation of the republic on March 25, 1924, King George II left Greece. By decree of the National Assembly and by referendum of November 3, 1935, King George II was reinstated in his traditional rights to the throne. He died in Athens on April 1, 1947.

Back in Romania

Elisabeth returned to her home country and in March 1935 acquired the Banloc manor in western Romania, which she expanded into one of her main residences. She brought in her own ideas about the equipment and management of the farm. She had another residence, the Elisabeth Palace in Bucharest, a large villa built in the Italian style, which opened on December 19, 1937 in the presence of the princess and her siblings Karl and Maria as well as some officials of the city.

The childless marriage between King George II and Queen Elisabeth of Greece was divorced on July 6, 1935 in Bucharest. For health reasons, Elisabeth went to Cannes on the French Riviera , where she gave piano lessons. Here she met the French painter Marc Favrat, 30 years her junior, whom she formally adopted in 1956 and who remained by her side until her death. Queen Elisabeth of Greece died in France in November 1956.
