Waste oil generally refers to used oil that no longer meets the requirements for lubrication or cooling . In particular, the term refers to used oil from technical applications, e.g. B. engine oil , transmission oil or hydraulic oil .

Properties and aging of oils

The properties of the oil change with regular use. Here are a few examples:

  • Cooking and frying oils absorb water and fats and change their chemical properties due to the high temperatures in the presence of water, proteins and carbohydrates. The oils are partially split, chemical double bonds break, and fatty acids, acrylamide and other undesirable compounds are formed.
  • Engine and machine oils accumulate with water, other lubricants and operating materials as well as foreign substances such as ash or metal debris. The additives contained are used up gradually.
  • In combustion engines, fuel residues, soot and ash collect in the oil and are kept in suspension by additives. Thermal stress creates new and possibly toxic compounds such as dioxins .

Legal

In 2002, the waste oil ordinance was modified in Germany and came into force in the changed form on April 16, 2002. The decisive change was the grouping of the various waste oils in collective categories (I, II, III and IV). Mixtures with oils of different categories are prohibited, which means they have to type is collected and disposed of. All waste oils in collective category I are primarily to be recycled.

Since mineral oil can contaminate drinking water and thus make it inedible, it must be taken to designated oil collection points. Vegetable oils and fats are not subject to the waste oil ordinance, but must also be properly disposed of. According to the administrative regulation for substances hazardous to water , waste oil is classified with a water hazard class WGK 3, unless it is waste oil of known origin.

In Germany, all sellers of lubricants are obliged, on presentation of the receipt, to take back used oil free of charge, up to the amount sold, and to dispose of it properly. The trade must provide suitable take-back systems for this. Furthermore, there is the possibility, at the municipal level, that consumers can return used oil to certain collection points in household quantities . The return to collection points can be chargeable. Improper disposal of used oil is a criminal offense. Special features are also regulated by the Recycling Management Act .

In Switzerland, mineral oils are subject to a disposal tax. In addition, companies have to pay disposal fees when collecting the used lubricants.
