Old bakery in Berlin-Pankow

The Alte Bäckerei is a historic bakery in the Berlin district of Pankow . The bakery was in regular operation from 1875 to 1964. In 2001, the buildings on the property at Wollankstrasse 130 were extensively renovated. The building complex now includes the historic bakery, the bread museum, the “Museum for Childhood in Pankow” and a historicizing hostel , which is supposed to reflect the atmosphere of the early 20th century with its furnishings. The bakery building is a registered monument in Berlin.

history

The house in which the hostel is located today was built around 1861 by master chimney sweep Carl Friedrich August Illhardt. In addition, the side wing and an outbuilding were built, which are no longer preserved today.

The property became a bakery after it was rededicated and expanded in 1875 by master baker Carl Hartmann. The bakery survived the Second World War unscathed, although the neighboring house was destroyed. The family ran the bakery until Carl Hartmann fell seriously ill in 1964. Carl Hartmann died in 1967. Ms. Martha Hartmann lived in the building until 2000.

Redevelopment

With the help of public funds, the property could be renovated from 2001 onwards. The old bakery was rededicated to a museum bakery by the client Ruthild Deus and under the direction of the civil engineer Heike Kraatz. Sponsors included the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development, the European Fund for Regional Development, the Berlin State Monuments Office and the Pankow District Office of Berlin.

Today's operation

The registered non-profit association “Alte Bäckerei Pankow e. V. “founded. The bakery is opened three days a week by volunteers and two to three types of Märkisches country bread are sold (the “Pankower long” and the “Pankower round”). The historic hostel can accommodate up to two people for a symbolic price. A “room for encounters” contains a small library and an archive with information about Pankow and Berlin. There are also exhibitions on traditional bakery craft in the buildings.
