Gate oak

The old oak (also thousand-year-old oak , gate oak , court oak ) is one of the oldest oaks in Germany . The pedunculate oak stands at the entrance to Dausenau in Rhineland-Palatinate on the banks of the Lahn and is registered as a natural monument under the number ND-7141-388 .

The age of the oak cannot be precisely determined. According to popular belief, it is already over 1,100 years old, which is probably due to the fact that it was called the "thousand year old oak" about 100 years ago. The former forest director Volkening set the age of the tree at around 700 to 800 years. The tree has a trunk circumference of over eleven meters. It is believed that the oak was used as a court oak in the Middle Ages . However, there is no evidence of this.

The tree was last renovated in the late 1990s, but there have also been previous renovations. In order to stabilize the tree, some spreading branches are held with straps. Like most old trees, the "old oak" is hollow, the larger openings are protected by metal grids.
