Hieronymus Besold

Hieronymus Besold (* around 1500 in Nuremberg ; † November 4, 1562 ibid) was a Lutheran theologian .

Life

Besold first attended school in Nuremberg. He was a student of Joachim Camerarius the Elder . In 1537 he enrolled to study at the University of Wittenberg . There he had been Martin Luther's table companion since 1542 and in 1544 acquired the academic degree of a master's degree . In 1545 he belonged to the artist faculty at the University of Wittenberg and, after Luther's death in 1546, leaned against Philipp Melanchthon , in whose house he frequented.

When he returned to Nuremberg, he held academic lectures from November 1546 and worked as a preacher in the Heilig-Geist-Spital in 1547 . Besold married Katharina Osiander on January 30, 1548. From this marriage three daughters and two sons were born. In 1555 he became superintendent of the hospital. In 1557 and 1558 he was involved in the reorganization of church relations in Zweibrücken . From 1560–61 he led the church visitation in Nuremberg together with Moritz Heling . From 1562 he was a preacher at the Lorenz Church .

He collected Luther's table speeches and was involved in editing his commentary on Genesis . During the Augsburg interim he had to bow to the Nuremberg Council and, despite his friendship with Melanchthon, was a representative of the Gnesiolutherans who opposed the Philippists .
