description

Wuppertal Gathe 2014 011.JPG

The old fire station Gathe was built in 1923, six years before the city of Elberfeld was united with other communities to form the city of Wuppertal . The building has an expanded gable roof and consists of two floors. A five- story riser tower was added to the building as a fire station as a training tower for jumping and instructor exercises.

Gates on the ground floor

On the ground floor there is a series of garages that can be closed with folding doors. The riser tower is arranged almost centrally in the front. The ground floor and first floor of the vehicle and crew building are plastered and painted in a yellow shade; The lower floor of the Steigerturm is plastered and painted, but the upper floors are clad in white wood. A large number of dormers are built into the roof surface of the converted attic , the positions of which are based on the window and gate openings of the facade.

The architectural style of the 1920s is reflected in the construction method, the type of plastering and the design and is a typical example of the architecture of this time. In the tradition of its early predecessors, the important needs of modern fire fighting are already being served; modern facilities for the motorization and mechanization of the extinguishing units are taken into account.

The entire building is under protection; this was entered on November 12, 1993 in the list of monuments.

use

The grounds of the old Gathe fire station together with the adjoining gymnasium were used by F. & G. Jaeger until 1905. The iron foundry and machine factory Jaeger was founded in 1868 and produced cast parts for the textile industry and later axles and axle boxes for the railroad. There were close business relationships with the Elberfeld-based Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft . After the area became too small in 1898, the company relocated its headquarters to Mettmanner Straße and gave up the Gathe property in 1905.

After the Elberfeld fire brigade had been equipped with gasoline-electric vehicles , car sprayers and engine ladders at the beginning of the 20th century , new premises were needed. Delayed by the First World War , a new fire station was built in Gathe from 1921 to 1923, which was geared to the modern demands of the fire service. The vehicle hall on the ground floor was connected to the crew rooms on the first floor by means of sliding bars, so that the fire brigade could deploy within 15 to 20 seconds after an alarm. The fire station was also equipped with a telegraph center; there were also several workshops in the building. These included locksmith's shop, blacksmith's shop, plumbing shop, carpentry shop, paint shop, tailoring shop, tubing shop and vulcanizing shop. A "Samaritan station" with an ambulance was in the neighborhood.

The building was used as a fire station until 1990. In 1991, the Wuppertal neighborhood home took over. V. initially the southern part, while the northern part was used as an urban overnight stay for unsettled men. The association renovated the premises and started the children's area in September 1991. Other clubs use the rooms in the evenings and on weekends. The great demand for the offers of the neighborhood home led to the fact that from 1995 the northern part was taken over and renovated by the association.

The RAA Wuppertal, a regional office for the promotion of children and young people from immigrant families, has also been housed in the building since 1997. A café with a beer garden opened that year, as well as an adventure room in which children can let off steam as part of a violence prevention measure.

A thorough renovation of the complex with funds from the urban development program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia took place between 1999 and 2001. The Steigerturm was converted into a climbing tower as part of this renovation work. An open-air stage in the courtyard of the old fire station was built in 2002.
