historical development

In 1765 the old barracks was built under the direction of master woodworker Salomon Sulzer. So that the ground floor could be built without columns or supports, the floors on the upper floors were stretched 15 meters and hung on the roof structure.

From 1846 to around 1900 the building was used as a barracks . The riding school was quartered on the ground floor and the cavalry recruits on the upper floors. After 1900 the building was no longer needed by the military and from then on served as a material depot for the building authority, a training object for the fire brigade and as a public kitchen . The agricultural school used part of the premises and during the First World War refugees were taken in in the barracks.

In the interwar period up to 1971, the building was used as a barracks for cyclist recruits for the second time . Military courses and various exhibitions were held in the remaining rooms.

1984 was SP - Initiative for a culture barracks of the Winterthur population declined. Three years later, a city council counter-proposal for conversion and renovation was adopted in a referendum. The construction costs would have been 7.28 million Swiss francs . However, on the night of October 2nd to 3rd, 1987, a fire destroyed large parts of the building. In March 1988 the city council decided to rebuild the old barracks. For the new construction, the internal structures and all still usable parts should be included. The architect Ernst Zollinger took on this task and constructed a house within a house. The outer shell was preserved as well as possible and the interior was completely redesigned. On November 7th, 1992 the old barracks was reopened as a culture barracks.

Since the reopening, eleven rooms in the main building of the barracks have been used for private and commercial events. While the large hall on the ground floor is mainly used for larger events, there are also artist studios on the upper floors. Around 1500 individual events are held annually. Around 80 events per year are organized by the operator of the Alte Kaserne itself.
