Old church on Kirchsteig

The old church of Chemnitz-Harthau - a former village that has become a district of Chemnitz - represents a historically significant church building. It is the old village church, which at the end of the 19th century had become too small for the growing industrial community and in 1908 was replaced by the much larger Luther Church . At the same time, the old cemetery was no longer used, because a new cemetery, the Bergfriedhof, was created near the new church. Since 1990 the building, abandoned to decay, has been renewed and renovated. Together with the churchyard, its old trees and a few elaborately designed tombs and a newly erected memorial stone for the Bernhard family, it is a protected cultural monument , i.e. an ensemble that is under monument protection (monument number 09204823).

history

The older church buildings for the small village of Harthau were probably always made of wood in the Middle Ages. In 1559 a stone church is mentioned; Part of the baptismal font is still present from this time. In 1682 an altar was set up by Christian Suttinger. In 1872 the owner of the Chemnitz worsted yarn spinning mill, Carl Friedrich Solbrig , was buried in the old churchyard . His tomb has been preserved to this day. In 1904, the use of the cemetery ceased when the mountain cemetery existed. On August 23, 1908, the last main service was held in the church; then the move to the new Luther Church took place.

Conversion, decay and renewal

At the end of the First World War, the old church became a war memorial chapel. Since 1945, after the Second World War, the chapel remained unused and was left to decay. It was not until 1990 that they began to be renewed and repaired. Nowadays it is used as an event and concert hall.
