Old mosque (tarsus)
The Old Mosque ( Turkish Eski Camii ), also Church Mosque or Baytimur Mosque , is a mosque in Tarsus in the Mersin Province of Turkey . It was created through the rededication of a Gothic church building from the 12th century.
history
The old mosque was built from 1102 as St. Paul's Cathedral on Roman foundations and those of a previous church, which was built around the year 300 AD. At that time Tarsus was part of the Kingdom of Lesser Armenia . The building has three aisles, has pointed arcades in the side aisles, is vaulted by a pointed barrel and ends in the east with a semicircular apse , which on the outside shows a straight choir closure.
On January 6, 1198, Leo II was crowned King of Armenia in the church by Archbishop Konrad von Mainz . After Tarsus was conquered by the Seljuk Ramazanids , the church was rededicated to a mosque by Ramazanoğlu Schehabettin Ahmet Bey in 1415 and a minaret was added. Even today, Jesus and his apostles are frescoed on the ceiling . The prayer niche ( mihrāb ) is in the middle of the south aisle. At the northwest corner of the building is a bell tower.
