The Alte Schanze is a ski jumping facility west of Bad Nauheim on the Eichberg in the foothills of the Taunus . Its time is unknown today, but it is believed to be related to the Battle of Johannisberg , a follow-up battle at Grüningen that raged on August 30, 1762 between troops allied with Prussia under the Hereditary Prince of Braunschweig and the French army under Condé and Soubise and ended in a victory for the French. In contrast, it was originally assumed that a Roman wooden tower stood here.
The hill itself has a round shape and a diameter of about 20 meters. The wall is about 1.0 meters high. A small ditch is in front of the wall. In the north the wall flattens out somewhat, which suggests that the entrance was located here.
Monument protection
The area of the ski jump is a ground monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.
