Charles Hornbostel ( Charles Christian "Chuck" Hornbostel ; born September 26, 1911 in Evansville , Indiana , † January 13, 1989 in New London , New Hampshire ) was an American middle -distance runner whose special distance was the 800-meter distance .
At the Olympic Games he was sixth in Los Angeles in 1932 and fifth in Berlin in 1936 .
Starting for Indiana University , he was NCAA champion over 800 m or 880 yards from 1932 to 1934 . In 1934 and 1936 he was US indoor champion over 1000 m .
On August 15, 1936, he was a member of two US relay teams that first set a world record in the 4-by-880-yard relay and then in the 4-by-1-mile relay in an international match against the United Kingdom.
