Old Chemnitz Synagogue
Memorial stele for the synagogue on Stephanplatz that was destroyed on November 10, 1938

The old synagogue on Stephanplatz in Chemnitz was built from 1897 to 1899 according to the plans of the Chemnitz architect Wenzel Bürger . The synagogue , with Romanesque and Gothic style elements and built for 700 worshipers, cost around 300,000 marks. With this synagogue, which was solemnly consecrated on March 7, 1899, Chemnitz received its first Jewish church.

The sacred building was devastated and set on fire during the pogrom night of November 9th to 10th, 1938. The ruin was then quickly removed. On November 10th, the remaining brickwork was blown up and on November 11th, the Jewish community was called upon to remove this "public nuisance". Since this was not able to do this, ten off-duty firefighters and about 45 helpers were deployed. These removed the remaining rubble in five shifts from November 12th to 15th, for which the Jewish community had to pay 35,905 Reichsmarks . The property was bought by the city the following year for 500 Reichsmarks.

On the 50th anniversary, November 13th, 1988, a memorial stone was inaugurated that reads:

"At this point, the rabbi Dr. Synagogue consecrated to Mühlfelder. It was reduced to rubble and ashes by fascist arsonists on the night of the pogrom on November 9, 1938. "
