Old synagogue in Liberec

The Old Synagogue in Liberec (German Reichenberg ), the administrative seat of the North Bohemian Region ( Liberecký kraj ) in the Czech Republic , was built in 1888/89. The former synagogue was destroyed by the National Socialists in 1938. A new synagogue was built there between 1995 and 2000.

history

In September 1889 the new synagogue in Reichenberg was inaugurated in the presence of the state and municipal authorities, the Protestant and Catholic clergy, the delegations of the neighboring Jewish communities and numerous associations. Its high tower even towered over the town hall. The dome , built in the early Renaissance style, was designed by the Viennese architect Karl König . The new synagogue had about 250 places each for men and women.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the monumental synagogue building was demolished and then burned down. The ruins were then razed to the ground.
