Old Synagogue (Sopron)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Torah shrine, old synagogue

The Old Synagogue was a synagogue in Sopron . Since the 13th century, 10 to 16 Jewish families have lived in Neugasse in Sopron. At the beginning of the 14th century a synagogue was built in the Gothic style with a ritual bath . The entrance leads to a large hall, the main portal of which is adorned with a pointed arch and tympanum from 1300. The Torah shrine shows a richly decorated stone frame and a tympanum with paintings (grapes and leaves). Parts of the hexagonal lectern are still original.

In 1526 the Jews were expelled from Sopron and the synagogue was converted into a residential building. In 1967 the building was restored. Today it also houses a museum (Synagogue Museum Sopron ( Hungarian Múzeum - Középkori "Ó" Zsinagóga )).
