Alter Graben (Emder Stadtgraben)

Old ditch

The Alte Graben is a canal in the East Frisian city of Emden . It was built in the 16th century as part of the defenses of the first ring of fortifications in the old town of Emden. It once formed the border between the densely built-up city center and the open marshland. This border remained in place for a long time after the Emden Wall was built , as the suburbs attached to the city through the new city fortifications were only slowly being built upon.

Today the Alte Graben extends from the water tower along Abdenastraße , Jungfernbrückstraße, Agterum and the Straße Zwischen Beiden Bleichen . At the level of the Kunsthalle Emden , the Hinter Tief opens into the Alte Graben. The Alte Graben itself begins at the western end of the Emden Stadtgraben and, after about one kilometer, joins the Emden Stadtgraben at the level of Nordertorstrasse.
