Old Hanauer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The old Hanauer is a student and joke song, the origin of the death of Count Johann Reinhard III. von Hanau (* 1665; † 1736), the last Count of Hanau.

Emergence

Count Johann Reinhard III. from Hanau

Johann Reinhard III. had no sons. There were two potential heirs, Landgrave Ludwig (IX.) Of Hesse-Darmstadt, son of the count's (pre-deceased) daughter, Charlotte Christine Magdalene Johanna (* 1700 - † 1731), and for the Hanau-Münzenberg part of the country, based on an inheritance contract the year 1643 between Hanau and the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel , King Friedrich of Sweden , represented by his brother, Wilhelm VIII of Hessen-Kassel. The deathbed of Count Johann Reinhard III. was surrounded by the diplomatic and legal representatives of the two parties who were only waiting for his death to take possession of the inheritance. The song Der Alte Hanauer is such a reaction of popular anger to this unworthy behavior.

text

Alive, because old Hanauer is still, Hanauer is still, Hanauer is still? Yes, yes, he's still alive, he's lying in bed and still kicking!

Speaker: Knock, knock, knock. " Ms. Lehmann asks you to (still) sing a little quieter, the old man from Hanau is dying ".

The singing becomes quieter. Ms. Lehmann asked again to sing a little quieter. This is repeated several times - the singing becomes a whisper.

Finally, Ms. Lehmann says: " You can now sing loudly again, old man from Hanau has just died ".

The singers then burst into a final roar:

Alive, because old Hanauer is still, Hanauer is still, Hanauer is still? No, no, he is no longer alive, he is lying in bed and no longer kicking!
