Charlotte, Countess of Hanau-Lichtenberg , full name Countess Charlotte Christine Magdalene Johanna von Hanau-Lichtenberg (born May 2, 1700 in Buchsweiler , † July 1, 1726 in Darmstadt ) was the wife of Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt .

biography

origin

Charlotte was the only surviving child of the last Hanau count, Johann Reinhard III. , and the Margravine Dorothea Friederike von Brandenburg-Ansbach . She was the sole heir to the County of Hanau .

The marriage

The husband: Landgrave Ludwig VIII.
The son: Ludwig IX.

Initially, the Hereditary Prince and later Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hessen-Kassel asked for the hand of Charlotte Christine. This marriage project, which would have continued to unite the County of Hanau in one hand, failed due to the religious difference between Wilhelm, who reformed , and Charlotte Christine, who was Lutheran .

The second applicant was the Hereditary Prince and later Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt , who was a Lutheran. They married on April 5, 1717. This marriage resulted in the following children:

  1. Louis IX (1719–1790)
  2. Georg Wilhelm (1722–1782)
  3. Karoline Luise (1723–1783)

death

Charlotte Christine died on July 1, 1726 in Darmstadt. A series of funeral sermons appeared at her burial on July 11, 1726 in Darmstadt .

The inheritance

Since Charlotte Christine died before her father, her son, who later became Landgrave Ludwig IX, acquired the Hanau inheritance. However, this was limited to the Lichtenberg part of the County of Hanau, as the Munzenberg part of the state fell to the latter due to an inheritance contract between the County of Hanau and the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel from 1643 . The affiliation of the office of Babenhausen between the two landgraves was controversial. There was almost a military conflict when the inheritance came about when Hessen-Darmstadt occupied the places of Dietzenbach , Schaafheim and Schlierbach , Hessen-Kassel, with the military already carefully stationed in Hanau , the remainder of the Babenhausen office. The dispute could only be settled after a long-standing legal dispute before the highest imperial courts. This was ended in 1771 by a settlement, the so-called participation recess . Thereafter the places Altheim , Dietzenbach, Harpertshausen , Schaafheim and Schlierbach fell to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt. The Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt incorporated these places into its Schaafheim office .
