The old Sulina lighthouse is a historical monument located downstream of the Romanian city of Sulina on the left bank of the Danube . It stands on the dam north of the Sulina arm near the mouth of the river in the Black Sea .

The lighthouse was taken out of service at the beginning of 1922 after expansion work on the Sulina Canal. It is on the Romanian Cultural Property List .

properties

The lighthouse was built as a round iron tower and is 13.7 meters high. When it was still in operation, the light signal could be seen up to a distance of eight nautical miles . Access to the lighthouse is through a long stone walkway that connects it to the port of Sulina.

The inscriptions of the companies involved in the construction can still be seen on the outer wall of the lighthouse.

There is another old lighthouse on the right bank of the Danube, which was also decommissioned after the Sulina Canal was extended.

history

An old Ottoman document shows that the first lighthouse in Sulina was built around 1745 on the left bank of the Danube on the initiative of Hacı Beşir Ağa . The document also states that locals had to provide the wax needed for lighting and maintain the headlight.

The current lighthouse was built on the left bank in 1887 at the time of the European Danube Commission . It was used until the 1920s. In 1922 extensive dyke work began at the mouth of the Sulina Canal. From this point on, the headlight was switched off because it was no longer in the muzzle area.

During the Second World War , the lighthouse was converted into an observation point that was used by the German Navy.

On November 1, 2017 it was announced that the lighthouse would be renovated with 10 million lei from European funds.

particularities

The lighthouse was the location of a successful Romanian television series in 1976 and 1978.

There is a geocache GC641T1 in the lighthouse.
