The house with the postal address Alter Markt 9 is a building in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund on the Alter Markt .
Current condition
The building was erected in 1967. Before that, there was a house built in the Wilhelminian style on this property that housed a printing company . The three- to five-storey house was built roughly on the model of the previous building. Its modern facade stands out clearly from the overall picture on this side of the Old Market. Towards the market it is designed as a perforated facade with white, smooth plaster. There is a garden in the inner courtyard.
From August 1973, the “Duett” café was housed in the building, and later the “pizza buffet”.
The building was rebuilt in 2000/2001; three balconies were added to the courtyard . The house houses the city's tourist information office and apartments.
The house is located in the core area of the city area recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site of the “ historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar ”.
Previous construction
The previous building, which had changing owners, was built in the Wilhelminian style. From around 1900 it housed a café, which in 1919 gave way to the “special house for home furnishings from the simplest to the most elegant”. In 1926, the Social Democratic People's Printing Office of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) acquired the house and set up a printing house in which the newspaper “Der Vorpommer” appeared. After the expropriation by the National Socialists in 1933, the "Pommersche Zeitung" of the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) was printed in the printing works .
During the bombing raid on Stralsund on October 6, 1944 , the house was almost completely destroyed, only a courtyard building and the adjacent core shop remained. A vacant lot remained here until it was rebuilt in the late 1960s.
