content

history

The term provisional was used to describe a pharmacist or first assistant who supervised a pharmacy. The recipe of the old provision is based on an aqua vitae (German: water of life) from a recipe book of the pharmacist Otto Kaiser, who ran the Rottmannsche Apotheke at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1910 the pharmacy was renamed the Ratsapotheke and taken over by Carl Greve, who first produced the liqueur in large quantities. The herbal liqueur was named Alter Provisor in 1980 by Jost Greve, who also had it trademarked and last produced the herbal liqueur from 1973 to 2013. In January 2014, the Ratsapotheke was closed in its 165th year. The brand was taken over by Greve Provisor UG, which initially had the old Provisor produced in the Albtor pharmacy in Reutlingen. Since August 2014, the old provisional has been manufactured again in Northern Germany. In November 2014, a specialist shop called Alter Provisor opened in a restored half-timbered building in Celle .
