In Velo Veritas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Velo Veritas is a retro - cycling race for everyone on classic racing bikes without timekeeping . The event has been taking place in the Weinviertel , the northeastern region of Lower Austria , since 2013 and has been organized for years by the In Velo Veritas working group with the core of Horst Watzl, Martin Friedl and Michael (Michl) Mellauner.

description

There is no timekeeping on racing bikes built up until 1987 or bikes that essentially correspond to the technical standards of that time. So with gear shift levers that sit on the frame and conventional pedals with cups and straps. External shift and brake cables are desirable. Clipless pedals and brake / gear lever combinations are not permitted . The number of starting places is limited. The event is regularly accompanied by a supporting program - including an exhibition of historical bicycles, roundtables, concerts, spare parts flea market .

The routes lead over distances of 70, 140 and 210 km, along the hills of the Weinviertel (maximum altitude 450 m) largely on asphalt and paved side roads, but also gravel roads and the typical regional cellar lanes . With a distance of 210 km, In Velo Veritas is the longest classic bike marathon in Europe. The event is part of the Giro d'Italia d'Epoca , a Europe-wide series of bike tours on historic racing bikes.

At checkpoints on the route - announced and "surprising" ones - a stamp must be picked up in the cardboard folder as proof that the participant has completed the route in full.

You drive in public road traffic, which is rather low on Sundays in the Weinviertel. A spare tube or tire repair kit is required. Support vehicles (including e-bikes) are not allowed. A bike service can be found at all refreshment stations. A broom wagon takes those affected by a breakdown and their bikes to the nearest service point or to a public transport stop. A final car checks that nobody falls by the wayside.

The bike tour took place for the first time in 2013 in Wolkersdorf with almost 300 participants. In 2014 Korneuburg an der Donau was the start and destination (400 participants), followed by the city of Retz, again Wolkersdorf, Stockerau, and again Retz and Poysdorf. 2020 will start in Hollabrunn for the first time - with postcode 2020.

Most recently (2019) drivers from 19 nations took part. Among the participants is mostly the three-time winner of the Austria Tour and four-time Glockner King Rudolf Mitteregger, who likes to be in the company of his former colleagues from the PUCH team from the late 70s and early 80s: Hans Lienhart , Willi Lauscha and Hans Summer . With it was already Gerhard Zadrobilek and Bernhard Kohl .

The organizer usually organizes cheap sleeping places in the gym as well as a caravan park.
