Life

Bowyer was born in London in 1952, the oldest of three children. He attended Woodroffe School in Lyme Regis and Imperial College London .

In 1977 he joined the Mathematics Department at the University of Bath . Shortly thereafter, he received his PhD from Imperial College London for his work on stress-induced vibration. While working in the Mathematics Department, he and David Watson invented the Bowyer-Watson algorithm named after them.

He then spent 20 years as a lecturer, later as a senior lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Bath. In 2012 he said goodbye to his academic life, but continued to work as Operations Manager at RepRap Professional Ltd. He also invented the RepRap Project - a self-replicating open source FDM 3D printer . The Guardian wrote, "[RepRap] has been called the invention that will bring down global capitalism, start a second industrial revolution and save the environment ...".

In January 2016, the company RepRapPro Ltd., of which Adrian Bowyer is managing director, announced on its website that the production and sale of 3D printers would be discontinued. Bowyer cited the growing competition from manufacturers of 3D printers in the low-price segment as reasons.

He is married and has a daughter of legal age.
