Alternatim is a form of performance of liturgical music . A specific part of the Ordinary of Mass (e.g. Kyrie ) is divided into verses. Each verse is first sung as an antiphon by two groups of singers and then in the second half in a polyphonic movement. One of the two groups can either consist of vocal soloists, an instrumental ensemble or an organ. For the missing even or odd verses, a simple chorale was sung or an improvisation was added on the organ.

A large number of compositions have been composed in the alternatim performance form, e.g. B. 20 Masses by Heinrich Isaac . This form of mass performance was widespread across Europe from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
