The old village is an old Slavic rampart in the village of Pechau in the city of Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

The castle wall, which is still recognizable as an elevation, is located southeast of the village of Pechau on the outskirts. The round wall has a diameter of 130 to 150 meters. On the east side the wall is cut through by the dike of the Elbe flood canal . The castle was originally completely surrounded by water. Partly it was directly on a natural watercourse, otherwise a deep trench was dug. The area around the castle, which was part of the Elbaue, was surrounded by vast floodplain forests.

history

The Slavic castle existed at least in the 10th century. When Pechau was first mentioned in 948, the place was called Pechouui Castle . The castle was the center of a castle district in Gau Moraciani , on whose western border it was. The Elbe was flowing at this time directly to Pechau over. The strategic importance of the facility resulted from this location. The Slavic population living here practiced agriculture, livestock, hunting and fishing.

The castle was probably destroyed around the year 1000. However, it was possible to understand from the finds that the complex was still inhabited in the 12th and 13th centuries. From the 12th century onwards, the region belonged to German rule.
