history

Braunlage Forestry Office 1958

In 1658 , Christian Walther (1625–1685), a factor in the ironworks in Braunlage , built this house as a trading post for Braunlager Eisenhütten to process iron stone. The remaining weather vane on the roof of the building bears the inscription CW FBLFZB 1658 ( C hristian W alther, f ürstlich- b raunschweigisch- l üneburgischer F actuator z u B raunlage). The flag was exhibited for a long time in the local museum of the city of Blankenburg . Today the flag can be viewed in the restaurant of the hotel located in the house.

Walther's successor was his son Johann Friedrich Walther (1659–1692), followed by Christian Julius Wackerhagen (1667–1748), who married Johann Friedrich's widow. During his arrest in the process of the 4 major factors, the factory was sealed and guarded by soldiers.

After the ironworks were shut down, the building became the property of the Brunswick-Lüneburg forest administration in 1796. For almost 200 years the forester's house was the seat of the ducal, later state forest office in Braunlage. It was the service building and the residence of the respective manager of the Brown camp forestry mining area that led from 1900 to the service name forester.

Since 1963 it has been the Harz Hotel Altes Forsthaus. The restaurateur Heinz Kühne rebuilt the building and built apartment apartments in the actual old forestry office building. A restaurant and a bowling alley were built in the neighboring houses. The bowling alley, described by the city manager in 1963 as a great asset for the city of Braunlage, was demolished again in 1990, and the apartments were converted into guest rooms.

The house has been a listed building since 1958. It is a local historical monument, the only one that still reminds us that Braunlage owes its existence to the ironworks.
