Old Hawaii

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ancient Hawaii is the period in Ancient Hawaiian history that preceded the unification of the Kingdom of Hawaii by Kamehamea I the Great in 1810. After it was first settled by Polynesian long-distance navigators between 300 and 800 AD, a cultural life also developed. Diverse agroforestry and aquaculture provided the nutrients for the Hawaiian cuisine of the time. Materials found in the tropics were used to build homes and elaborate temples called Heiau were built with lava rocks.

A social system with religious leaders and a ruling class organized an orderly and strong population. In 1778, Captain James Cook was the first known European to discover Old Hawaii.

Priests travel through Kealakekua Bay for their first contact rituals. Each mask consists of a pumpkin bottle adorned with foliage and tapa strips.
