Old Town Hall

The old town hall of Wiesbaden , built between 1608 and 1610, is the oldest building in the city. It is located in the central square of Wiesbaden's old town on Marktstrasse, which touches the Schlossplatz . The city palace of the Nassau dukes , which today houses the representative rooms of the Hessian state parliament , and the new town hall are located diagonally opposite .

The old town hall was originally built in the Renaissance style by Antonius Schöffer according to plans by Valerius Bausendorff with a solid ground floor and a very richly colored half-timbered upper floor with oriels and high curved gables. The two-flight staircase had no handrail. The city's residents worked seven weeks for the construction without pay. To the right of the entrance was the pillory with chains and neck irons. On market days, the delinquents had to stand here and were at the mercy of their fellow citizens.

Under the window parapets of the 1st floor there were 11 relief panels carved from oak in the front and the two bay windows, which were brought to the municipal museum during the renovation in 1928. In 1725 minor alterations were made. 1828 the former half-timbered upper floor was gotisierend replaced by stone masonry. The wooden reliefs under the front windows, which represent the virtues of strength , justice , charity , wisdom and moderation , were replaced by stone copies. The originals made of oak can be viewed today in the Wiesbaden Museum .

Today the building serves the city of Wiesbaden as a registry office . There is a wine bar in the vaulted cellar, which can be reached via a staircase in the middle under the two-flight flight of stairs.

In front of the outside staircase, between the city palace and the old town hall , stands the market fountain , built in 1753 , whose central column is crowned by the Nassau lion with a shield.

In 2002 the building was extensively renovated and equipped with a glass elevator on the back.
