history
The building was constructed in the Italianate style between 1858 and 1860 . This style was very popular in Canada from the 1840s to the 1870s. Inspired by the Renaissance palazzi in Rome and Florence, these buildings had a raised ground floor and were constructed with massive stones.
The house was designed by FP Rubidge. Today it serves the city of Hamilton as a cultural center ( Workers Arts and Heritage Center ).
Special equipment
The floor plan of the building consists of a compact, massive rectangle with a flat roof. A hierarchical structure can be ascribed to the individual floors, which were built on a solid base plate.
The walls and walls were built with massive, worked stones, with the ground floor being built raised as a podium. The first floor was built with smooth stone blocks upwards and equipped with many classic details such as cornices, cornices, decorative moldings and plastered parapets.
The windows and doors were provided with decorative borders. The facade is symmetrical with a central entrance door. The Italian motifs can be found in the interior as well as in the outdoor area.
