Althiburos
Althiburus , also Althiburos , was an ancient city in the Roman province of Africa proconsularis on the road from Carthage to Theveste . It was 35 kilometers (as the crow flies) south-southeast of El Kef , in the Kef Governorate , at the confluence of two streams, north of today's Dawwar Awlad Gama .
The place name is derived from the Punic language . Strong Punic population elements are also evidenced by inscriptions.
In Roman times, the city was raised to a municipality under Emperor Hadrian .
There are remains of architectural monuments such as the forum , a theater and houses with mosaics in the urban area . Numerous inscriptions in Punic and Latin have also been found. During the planned investigation of the surrounding area, Neolithic finds were also made.
The titular bishopric Altiburus of the Roman Catholic Church goes back to the late antique bishopric of the city .
The history of this Roman city is currently being worked on as a research focus of the Catalan University of Barcelona .
