Altica oleracea , dt. Unechter Kohlerdfloh , one of the flea beetles (tribe Alticini, subfamily Galerucinae) from the family of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae).

features

The beetles grow to be 3 to 4 millimeters in size. Their color varies between metallic green, blue-green, blue to gold-green. Legs and antennae are dark. The posterior femora are thickened. The pronotum has a delicate transverse furrow on the basal half. The elytra are finely dotted. Altica oleracea is difficult to distinguish from related species. Usually this is only possible by examining the male genitals .

Occurrence

Altica oleracea is widespread and very common in Europe. The range of the species extends to the north of Scandinavia. The species is also represented in the British Isles.

Way of life

The fleas can be observed from March to autumn. Bushes and shrubs form their typical habitat. In early summer they lay their eggs on their host plants, which are also their forage plants. These include willowherb ( Epilobium ), especially the small-flowered willowherb ( E. parviflorum ), and evening primrose ( Oenothera ). The heather ( Calluna vulgaris ) is also known as a host and fodder plant. The beetle larvae develop on the leaves of their host plants that they feed on.

Natural enemies

The larvae of the caterpillar flies (Tachinidae) Medina luctuosa and Leiophora innoxia are considered to be endoparasitoids of the adult beetles.
