Alto Estate

The winery Alto Wine Estade located near the town of Stellenbosch , community Stellenbosch in the district Cape Winelands the province of Western Cape in South Africa . The estate's vineyards are located in the south of the Stellenbosch growing area, around 15 kilometers from False Bay . A cooling breeze blows over from this in the height of summer. The cultivation takes place on slopes on the western side of the Helderberg, at heights of 100 to 500 m above sea level on an area of ​​around 100 hectares.

history

The origins of the estate go back to 1693. At that time it was part of the Groenrivier farm ("Green River"), but wine was not grown at that time. It was not until 1919 that the then owner Hennie Malan divided up the farmland and sold half of it to his brother-in-law.

Over the next few years, Malan and his son Manie converted the remaining land from farmland and wilderness to vineyards. They built a homestead and a cellar and planted vines on the lower slopes. They chose the name based on the Latin term for height to indicate the height of the vineyard location.
