The municipality of Alto del Carmen is located in the Región de Atacama in northern Chile. The inhabited parts of the municipality extend over the river valleys on the upper reaches of the Rio Huasco . It consists of around 30 individual settlements. The main town Alto del Carmen is located at the confluence of the Río del Carmen with the Río del Transito to the Río Huasco.

Agriculture

The pisco, which is marketed nationwide, is produced in the municipality . The climate is desert-like with an annual mean temperature of 13.7 ° C and little rainfall. Sweet wine is also grown. The rivers ensure the water supply.
